Initial set up
The X1 came with pre-activated Windows 10.0, installed on the board’s eMMC chip. In the sample we received, it includes 8GB RAM and 128GB of eMMC storage. Out of the 128GB, approximately 21GB is used by the Windows system OS files, leaving the user with 94GB of available free space. However, it’s important to note that the eMMC read and write speeds are considerably lower when compared to an NVMe SSD.
To achieve enhanced performance, I highly recommend investing in a storage solution of 1TB or above. This will greatly assist in effortlessly installing multiple operating systems. With Windows OS already pre-installed on the eMMC, you can consider cloning the partitions or opt for a fresh installation of Windows on the NVMe drive.
User experience
During our trial, we were impressed by the fast and smooth performance of the new Ubuntu OS, which we ran from a USB drive. The user experience was comparable to using Windows 10 on a regular desktop computer.
Not only that, but we also accomplished the successful installation of Linux Mint 21.3 Cinnamon on our 1TB NVMe drive. This setup grants us the privilege of choosing between Windows and Linux as bootable operating systems.
